Nearsightedness or myopia is a major health concern today. Research over the past 20 years has clearly shown that children with medium or high myopia are at significantly more risk of vision loss when they age. By slowing down the advancement of your childs Myopia, we can eliminate that risk of blindness and vision loss.

Ortho K lenses are custom made contact lenses that are worn while you sleep at night. The contacts gently reshape the eye at night, leaving you with 2020 vision during the next day. For people who are not a candidate for LASIK eye surgery, Ortho K is often recommended. The primary use f Ortho K lenses is for myopia control in kids 8 and over.

Q&A with Our Optometrists | Ortho-K

What is Ortho-K?

Ortho K are custom lenses that are used to gently reshape your vision while you sleep, much like a retainer at an orthodontist. By wearing these contacts at night, the patient can go the next day (and often more than 1 day) without the need to wear glasses and contact lenses. Ortho K is considered the most effective form of slowing down nearsightedness in kids (myopia control), and as a great alternative to LASIK.

Who is a candidate for Ortho-K?

Ortho-k is very suitable for nearsighted people who are not appropriate candidates for vision correction surgery, such as children.

Individuals of all ages with healthy eyes can try ortho-k, namely because it can be discontinued at any point without permanent effects to the eyes.

People who require vision correction and engage regularly in sports or work in extremely dusty, dirty environments will also appreciate the convenience of ortho-k. Many emergency personnel such as firemen, police, and military find OrthoK the perfect solution.

Our doctors and staff take the time to teach all our patients proper contact lens care and also possible consequences if proper care is not taken.  We will patiently guide new contact lens wearers through successful insertion and removal techniques until each patient can confidently handle their lenses.

We follow up the initial fitting and then make any necessary changes in fit or materials to get you the best possible fit. Then we continue with long-term follow-up to monitor the condition of the lenses and to ensure that proper hygiene is being maintained.  Learn more about getting an Eye Exam for Contact Lenses.

  • If you need correction for presbyopia but dislike the idea of bifocal eyeglasses, you have many contact lens options.
  • These rigid lenses aren’t as popular or well-known as soft lenses, but they offer the advantages of durability, crisp vision and high oxygen permeability.
  • Challenges such as astigmatism, presbyopia, keratoconus and dry eyes needn’t be a barrier to contact lens wear, but they do require more time and patience.
  • “I can’t wear soft contacts; I have astigmatism.” This once-true statement is now simply a myth.
  • Orthokeratology, or "ortho-k," is the process of reshaping the eye with specially-designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses. The goal of ortho-k is to flatten the front surface of the eye and thereby correct mild to moderate amounts of nearsightedness and astigmatism.
  • If you are suffering from Keratoconus, irregular corneas, post eye surgery discomfort and vision problems, severe dry eyes and other conditions that cause discomfort and lower quality vision, you should consider the benefits of Scleral Contact Lenses. Considered the most comfortable and best vision custom contact lens available today, now fitting sclerals at our Dallas eyecare clinic and Carrolton eye care clinic.
