LASIK for the correction of Astigmatism: A misshapen cornea causes astigmatism. It is often oval shaped rather that the ideal spherical configuration. Light entering the eye cannot be uniformly focused onto the retina. A blurred image results in all areas of focus.
To treat astigmatism, the cornea must be made more spherical. By changing the pattern of the laser, tissue is removed in one direction more than the other. The image is made to focus clearly on the retina.
Astigmatism can be corrected simultaneous with the myopic LASIK treatment. The amount of astigmatism that can be corrected is dependent on the degree of the accompanying myopia or hyperopia.
